If you follow the news of the processor market, you probably know that on June 8, in honor of the 40th anniversary since the release of the Intel 8086, the first in the history of the chip with x86 – Intel has released a special limited edition “jubilee” Intel Core i7-8086K. This festive new – improved modification of the flagship six-core Coffee Lake for the platform LGA 1151 v2 capable “out of the box” to develop the frequency to 5.0 GHz. However, most of the Core i7-8086K compared to we previously encountered instances of the Core i7-8700K able to work at lower supply voltages. The frequency of 4.0 GHz, it is quite achievable already at a voltage of 1.0 V, and in this mode, no stability issues are observed. But even in such a gentle state, the processor is still noticeably heated: obtained in this case 65 degrees immediately suggests that the outstanding overclocking will not be due to overheating CPU.

So it is: the maximum frequency at which Core i7-8086K was able to be tested for stability in LinX 0.9.2, steel only 4.8 GHz, obtained at a voltage of 1,225 V.

It would seem that the CPU voltage is not so high, but core temperature still very close to the 100-degree limit on which desktop Coffee Lake turns on the throttle. It turns out that there is nothing “beautiful” 5.0 GHz under any load it can not go. In its original condition Core i7-8086K at the overclocking potential was similar to the ordinary Core i7-8700K, which if possible overclocking up to 5.0 GHz, then the vast majority of cases, only with the addition of a corrective coefficient of -2 under AVX loads.

Whether in such a situation to help the scalp? Most likely Yes, because the acceleration, obviously, rested not in the limit of silicon and temperature. Procedure itself scalping hardly deserves detailed description. Everything is done exactly as in the case of Core i7-8700K – anniversary Core i7-8086K perfect does not differ from it in physical performance, including how heat-dissipating cover is mounted on the CPU Board and that she’s underneath it.

The performance of the procedure is also not in doubt: the CPU temperature achieved in LinX 0.9.2 in overclocking modes, immediately dropped by about 15-20 degrees, which seemingly cleared the way for the conquest of the coveted 5-gigahertz mark. However, there was another problem. Close to linear increase in frequency during acceleration at the existing instance of Core i7-8086K was observed only up to 4.8-4.9 GHz. Further, to ensure the stability required for more serious increment of tension, which immediately resulted in a noticeable temperature rise. However, full stability at 5.0 GHz, we managed to achieve only at 1.35 V. this means that the maximum frequency limit of semiconductor crystal under consideration of the product has remained close to what could boast six-core Coffee Lake before. It turns out that if to have in mind the operation in the overclocking modes, the anniversary processor should not be considered guaranteed best alternative to conventional flagship Coffee Lake. Core i7-8700K and Core i7-8086K approximately equal in this respect.
