Photo denser part of daily life, and the camera is increasingly seen not as a tool of creative expression for some, or staff to others, but as a tool to create “content”. An endless stream of information pouring down on us and produced by us, requires high-quality photos and videoitalia, and because the actual question, which tool would be ideal for such tasks. The ease, mobility, speed, easy to use, powerful artificial intelligence, reliability — that is, perhaps, the characteristics that meet the trends of the time. New camera Canon EOS Mark2 M6, it seems, meets all requirements. Check to see how well it works in practice.

Despite the fact that Canon for a long time consistently declared if not total supremacy of DSLR camera over mirrorless and even released their “ultracompact” EOS 100D/200D to demonstrate that cameras with a pentaprism can be really small, the company has gradually recognized that the rejection of the mirror can be quite meaningful. And first launched a series of full-frame EOS besserglik R, and then became dramatically expand the range of cameras with the EF-M. moreover, this year the company first turned to the practice of simultaneous release SLR and mirrorless cameras with roughly the same characteristics, as it came with M6 EOS Mark II and EOS 90D. So it is clear from the course: a significant part of it is written in this review about the M6 Mark II applies to potentially more hits EOS 90D, material about which we will not do.

#Key features

Canon is actively developing its collection of mirrorless cameras and the EOS M line is one of the most promising, designed for a wide range of users calling at the professional and, of course, blogger segment. Two years ago, the world saw model Canon EOS M6 (which became, in turn, a logical continuation of the EOS M3), but now in front of us — its the second modification. Despite the fact that the overall concept of the product is saved, Canon EOS M6 Mark II “pump” in almost all respects, and looks much more modern and user-friendly apparatus. Let’s see what are the main innovations used by the manufacturer.

  • The camera uses an APS-C sensor with higher resolution is 32.5 megapixels (compared to 24.2 megapixels in the previous model).
  • For image processing meets new processor – DIGIC 8. Digital optimization of a lens and diffraction correction.
  • Speed continuous shooting with servo focus has grown twice — from 7 to 14 frames per second.
  • Done a lot of work over quality auto focus: the number of auto-focus areas increased from 49 to 143, there was a regime of facial recognition and eye tracking.
  • There was an electronic shutter with a shutter speed up to 1/16 000 sec.
  • Became available to charge the battery via USB.
  • Significantly improved video capture: available up to 4K resolution (UHD) (3840 × 2160) 30/25 frames per second.

Let me remind you that to EOS M EF-M developed a special line of optics, which currently includes nine light and compact lenses. Two of them – the EF-M 55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM and EF-M 32mm f/1.4 STM – I was able to test together with M6 Canon EOS Mark2. The camera is also compatible with lenses from Canon SLR cameras with an EF mount using a specially designed adapter. In the test participated lenses EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM and EF 40mm f/2.8 STM.

#Design and ergonomics

Outwardly, the Canon EOS M6 Mark II is quite similar to its predecessor, the Canon EOS M6. But some changes still occurred. The camera was a little heavier and larger, its weight is 408 grams (with battery and memory card), and the size is 119.6 × 70,0 × 49,2 mm M6 Mark II has a very comfortable grip for the fingers and anti-slip surface, making it easy to shoot “offhand”, on the one hand, of the fingers it does not slip. Overall this is a really compact camera, but much still depends on what lens you’ll be using it. For example, with lens EF 40mm f/2.8 STM even with the adapter EF-M-EF-S it will fit in a small purse.

But with the lens EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM (also adapter), the design looks rather bulky, and the optics frankly outweighs.

I really liked a bunch of M6 Mark II with lens EF-M 55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM. Light and compact the lens is perfectly balanced with respect to the camera body, the technique is easy to hold in hand and does not require a special camera bag.

Walk briefly on all controls.

On the left edge is a button lift, built-in flash, as well as connectors for microphone and external control panel, hidden under the rubber cover.

On the right side also under the hood, there are ports of HDMI and USB Type-C.

The front is a EF-M, release button lens and lamp the AF-assist illuminator.

From below we see a tripod socket and a combined compartment for the battery and memory card. The camera supports SD / SDHC / SDXC (ultimate standard speed — UHS-II). When using the tripod platform compartment is locked, which of course is not very convenient in a situation when it is necessary to replace the memory card or battery but it is tolerable fee for the compactness of the camera.

A large part of the rear surface is an LCD display.

The characteristics of the display is similar to that used in the previous version of the camera: its size is 3 inches with a resolution of 1 040 000 points. The display is equipped with touch screen and tilting mechanism. He turns 180 degrees upwards, which is useful, for example, to help or those who like to make selfies, while also rotating mechanism makes it convenient to shoot from unusual angles — for example, ground level. To use the display I was comfortable, but still the implementation type of rotary mechanism in the camera Canon EOS R I see a more comfortable and tactile: mechanism Canon EOS Mark II M6 subjectively seems to be more “brittle”.

In addition to the display on the back of the camera we see the shift lever auto-focus from manual to auto, the Info button, movie record button, playback and menu. Between them is a selector disk with call button quick menu in the center and buttons to select drive mode, input exposure compensation, on/off flash and delete the pictures. The location and functionality of the buttons seemed to me very convenient, and I think they will be easy to remember even quite inexperienced user, especially since some of them can be remapped in the settings. Not a very good implementation of the selector disk to rotate it smoothly in a circle uncomfortable, your finger slips and slips. But it is an ergonomic change, to adjust to which is easy. Rear-side, on the ledge under the thumb buttons for selecting focus mode and exposure lock.

The top is a built-in flash, hot Shoe, selector selecting a shooting mode, shutter release button, combined with the drive changing the settings, soft key M-Fn, as well as a new control — button Dual Function, which by default causes some of the functions from the quick menu. It is combined with the second disk, change settings, and with lever on-off switch of the camera.

Separately, I note that the camera has no built-in viewfinder. This point may seem awkward to those photographers who are accustomed to using SLR cameras, and this fact just is the boundary that separates the M6 EOS Mark II and EOS 90D, which are otherwise almost identical. However, it is recognized that it has grown a whole generation of users for whom the presence of a viewfinder is not a necessity. “Smartphone” principles of photography are gaining momentum: shooting using a display, touch — all of it densely entered into our life, and Canon is keeping pace with the times. But for those who viewfinder really necessary, also there is a solution — an optional electronic viewfinder HF-DC2, with a resolution of 2 360 000 points and 100% coverage, which “clings” to the “hot Shoe”. I have not had the opportunity to experience interchangeable the viewfinder to work, but I must admit that it is needed I have not experienced.

Ergonomics as a whole left a feeling of reasoning: to use the camera comfortably, and most importantly — the controls are very flexible, all buttons can be configured by assigning them user-friendly functions and various modes for shooting pictures and video:

An experienced user who is already accustomed to a particular organization functions, certainly appreciate the opportunity to “reshape” the camera in a convenient way, and the novice is likely to be glad basic settings buttons, as they are very logical and cover most of the nonspecific needs. I feel a bit sorry disk input exposure compensation, which is present on EOS M6, and the appearance of a button Dual Function I don’t see a big need, but it is a matter of individual preference — I like analog controls, someone not accustomed to them.

#Interface

Menu in the camera is oriented horizontally and contains six main sections, each with several pages. To navigate through the menus like you can with the touch controls, just touching the screen and using the navigation block on the rear surface of the camera. The organization is very simple and easy, even a novice user will hardly confused. Functions much — like I said, the manufacturer has taken care to ensure that each user could customize the machine for themselves. For a detailed study of the menu will take time, but worth it. The interface is completely Russified. In addition to the main, the camera has a quick menu button “Q” – it contains the most frequently requested features. Grid quick menu is displayed on the screen directly over the image.

#Wireless capabilities

As almost any modern camera, Canon EOS M6 Mark II is able to connect to a computer or mobile device via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. With app Canon Camera Connect is very easy and convenient to throw images to a smartphone for further publication in social networks is a little longer than to take a picture directly on the phone, but offers more possibilities in terms of creativity. You can automatically transfer shots to your computer. The mobile device can also be used for remote shooting, which is very convenient, for example, when shooting of the compositions — you don’t need to run between the camera on the tripod and composition, to track changes in the frame.

As expected, the company Tokina has announced the release of the successor to its popular lens for macro AT-X M100 f/2.8 PRO D Macro. New full frame lens called the Tokina atx-i 100mm F2.8 FF Macro. It’s a little lighter and shorter than its predecessor, and like him, is not only designed for macro photography but for portraits, landscapes, street scenes — in all cases, when can we use a moderate telephoto lens.

The lens is available in mounts for Canon EF and Nikon F, and the rotation direction of the focus ring in each variant corresponds to the direction adopted in the corresponding system. Switching between manual and automatic focusing is performed by displacement of the focus ring in the longitudinal direction. To speed up focusing there is a range limiter. Note that the version with Nikon F mount has autofocus motor, relying on the drive in-camera and so on Nikon cameras without an AF motor, such as model D3000 series and D5000, as well as cameras D40, D40X and D60, possible manual focus only.
