If you follow the news of the processor market, you probably know that on June 8, in honor of the 40th anniversary since the release of the Intel 8086, the first in the history of the chip with x86 – Intel has released a special limited edition “jubilee” Intel Core i7-8086K. This festive new – improved modification of the flagship six-core Coffee Lake for the platform LGA 1151 v2 capable “out of the box” to develop the frequency to 5.0 GHz. Along with this microprocessor giant boasts of other achievements, albeit not having as beautiful of a numerical expression. And it looks quite in the spirit of the company: from our memory not yet erased the previous anniversary CPU, the Pentium G3258that Intel released for the 20th anniversary of the brand Pentium. It had an unlocked multiplier, which gave a purely budgetary and ordinary CPU considerable additional practical value.

However, looking ahead, will immediately disappoint: this time to make as generous gift from Intel did not work, and a marked superiority in consumer qualities over other Coffee Lake and Core i7-8086K no need to wait. Despite the fact that the novelty is confined to an even more memorable date in the history of the company and is produced with much more pomp, in reality it is a very close synonym Core i7-8700K.

Thus, in most situations, the Turbo Boost technology can overclock the Core i7-8086K and Core i7-8700K to the same limits. The difference exists only when the load on one core, in which case the anniversary processor is really able to take a higher frequency. But in reality it means little: refined single-threaded load now occurs very rarely at least because even if the executable of the foreground application is single-threaded, almost always parallel to working with him and some background processes, including relating to the operating system. In other words, if we talk about the functioning of the processors in the normal mode in real life, the major reasons why Core i7-8086K must somehow differ markedly in performance from its conventional counterpart, is not visible.

#Acceleration

In order to obtain a comprehensive picture of the properties of overclocking Core i7-8086K, was built by a “temperature map” that describes the heating of an existing instance of the processor at various frequencies and voltages. However, most of the Core i7-8086K compared to we previously encountered instances of the Core i7-8700K able to work at lower supply voltages. The frequency of 4.0 GHz, it is quite achievable already at a voltage of 1.0 V, and in this mode, no stability issues are observed. But even in such a gentle state, the processor is still noticeably heated: obtained in this case 65 degrees immediately suggests that the outstanding overclocking will not be due to overheating CPU.

So it is: the maximum frequency at which Core i7-8086K was able to be tested for stability in LinX 0.9.2, steel only 4.8 GHz, obtained at a voltage of 1,225 V.

It would seem that the CPU voltage is not so high, but core temperature still very close to the 100-degree limit on which desktop Coffee Lake turns on the throttle. It turns out that there is nothing “beautiful” 5.0 GHz under any load it can not go. In its original condition Core i7-8086K at the overclocking potential was similar to the ordinary Core i7-8700K, which if possible overclocking up to 5.0 GHz, then the vast majority of cases, only with the addition of a corrective coefficient of -2 under AVX loads.

Whether in such a situation to help the scalp? Most likely Yes, because the acceleration, obviously, rested not in the limit of silicon and temperature. So we decided to replace Intel’s termoenergetyczny material under the CPU cover on Coollaboratory Liquid Ultra – liquid metal with a clearly better thermal conductivity.

Procedure itself scalping hardly deserves detailed description. Everything is done exactly as in the case of Core i7-8700K – anniversary Core i7-8086K perfect does not differ from it in physical performance, including how heat-dissipating cover is mounted on the CPU Board and that she’s underneath it.

The performance of the procedure is also not in doubt: the CPU temperature achieved in LinX 0.9.2 in overclocking modes, immediately dropped by about 15-20 degrees, which seemingly cleared the way for the conquest of the coveted 5-gigahertz mark. However, there was another problem. Close to linear increase in frequency during acceleration at the existing instance of Core i7-8086K was observed only up to 4.8-4.9 GHz. Further, to ensure the stability required for more serious increment of tension, which immediately resulted in a noticeable temperature rise. As a result, the change termoenergetska material and could not cause a qualitative improvement in the overclocking potential. The only noticeable difference the Core i7-8086K found during acceleration, only concerns the fact that the processor is able to conquer a fairly high frequency with a more restrained increase in voltage. However, full stability at 5.0 GHz, we managed to achieve only at 1.35 V. this means that the maximum frequency limit of semiconductor crystal under consideration of the product has remained close to what could boast six-core Coffee Lake before. It turns out that if to have in mind the operation in the overclocking modes, the anniversary processor should not be considered guaranteed best alternative to conventional flagship Coffee Lake. Core i7-8700K and Core i7-8086K approximately equal in this respect.

All this means only one thing: the selection of crystals for the anniversary of processors is not frequency potential, and for some other indications, for example, on energy at the frequency of 4.0 GHz or ability to work at this frequency with a relatively low voltage. Yes, it can be converted into better overclocking potential, but there is no determinism in this. As shown by experiments with our instance of Core i7-8086K, on the one hand, the processor may have a low VID and look promising in the nominal modes, but high frequencies to take very reluctantly.

The obtained results overclocking testing need another comments. A couple of weeks ago Silicon Lottery, online service, which deals with the selection and scalping processors, has published his statistics of overclocking Core i7 – 8086K, according to which about 60 percent of the instances of the Core i7-8086K able to take the frequency of 5.2 GHz.

Does this mean that tested in our laboratory processor is a very bad representative of a new family? Not at all. It’s in the methodology used Silicon Lottery. B450 MSI Gaming Pro Carbon AC comes in standard box made of cardboard. On the front side you can find the model name of the motherboard and chipset, as well as an enumeration of supported technologies.

#Design and features
